The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced an upcoming bridge restoration project on Route 3009 (Corner Road), positioned over Licking Creek in Montgomery Township, Franklin County, approximately four miles southwest of Mercersburg. The rehabilitation project aims to ensure the continued safety and efficiency of the bridge, which is crucial for local traffic.
The project encompasses the replacement of the beams and deck of the bridge, alongside substructure repairs and minor roadway reconstruction near the approaches. Additional updates will include new guide rails, scour repair, and refreshed pavement markings and signage. A temporary cofferdam will also be constructed to facilitate necessary repairs to the existing abutments. The roadway will maintain its current width, featuring 11-foot lanes and 3-foot shoulders.
Due to the construction, the bridge will be closed to all traffic for about eight months. A detour route for general traffic will cover approximately three miles via Blairs Valley Road and Shimpstown Road. Meanwhile, a longer eight-mile detour will be in place for trucks, utilizing Buchanan Trail (Route 416), Fort Loudon Road (Route 75), Clay Lick Road, and Shimpstown Road.
The design phase of the project is ongoing, with construction anticipated to commence during the 2027 construction season. To facilitate public engagement and feedback, a digital display of the project plans has been made available online through April 7, 2025. Residents can view the plans and submit comments by visiting the PennDOT District 8 website, selecting “Projects Near You,” then “District 8 Projects,” and finally “Corner Road over Licking Creek.”

This project display serves not only to introduce the project but also to gather public input on any concerns or questions related to the project, particularly its potential impact on cultural resources as defined under the National Historic Preservation Act.
