As the May 7 federal REAL ID enforcement deadline approaches, Pennsylvania officials from various agencies are urging residents to ensure they are prepared for domestic air travel without disruptions. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), Philadelphia International Airport, American Automobile Association (AAA), and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) are collaborating to inform Pennsylvanians about the impending requirements.
PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll emphasized the importance of being prepared, “With federal REAL ID enforcement beginning on May 7, your travel planning should include making sure you have proper ID to fly.” He reminded travelers that upgrading to a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or ID card is essential unless they plan to use a passport or other federally-acceptable identification for domestic flights.
To facilitate the transition, PennDOT is hosting REAL ID Days at driver license centers across the state, prioritizing REAL ID processing on these days. Information on these events is available on PennDOT’s website.
Philadelphia International Airport CEO, Atif Saeed, also highlighted the joint efforts, thanking the TSA, PennDOT, and AAA for their partnership in this initiative. He stressed the importance of obtaining a REAL ID to ensure smooth travel experiences.

Jana Tidwell, Manager of Public and Government Affairs for AAA Mid-Atlantic, advised travelers to start the REAL ID application process early. “Travelers interested in obtaining a REAL ID should begin the application process ahead of time to ensure they do not experience any travel delays or postponements,” Tidwell said.
For those unsure about the need for a REAL ID, PennDOT offers an online wizard to assist in decision-making. It is important to note that passports will still be required for international travel.
To obtain a REAL ID, Pennsylvanians must provide several documents for verification, including proof of identity, Social Security number, Pennsylvania residency, and any legal name changes. A full list of required documents and more information on the REAL ID program can be found on PennDOT’s website.

The initial cost for a REAL ID is a one-time fee of $30, in addition to the regular renewal fees. The expiration date of the initial REAL ID product will include any remaining time on their existing license plus an additional four years, ensuring no loss of previously paid time.
REAL ID-compliant products are mailed within 15 days after application at a Driver License Center, or available immediately at one of PennDOT’s 15 REAL ID Centers. Residents who received their first Pennsylvania license or ID after September 1, 2003, may have their REAL ID documentation already on file and can apply for pre-verification online.
